This surgery is indicated for either
- Scoliosis : which is lateral curvature of spine
- Kyphosis : which is angular deformity of spine in coronal plane
Correction of spinal deformity requires proper pre-operative evaluation with x-rays and scans. Pulmonary function and anaesthetic evaluation is essential prior to surgery. These operations require a multidisciplinary approach.
Surgery is performed either by anterior or posterior approach. Modern instrumentation permits adequate purchase thereby permitting correction of deformities in all planes. Monitoring of neurology either by electrical tests or wake up test is performed during surgery. Post-operative rehabilitation is important following such major surgical procedures. Patients should discuss about risks with these procedures.
